Compare Capable Crossovers

With refined and roomy accommodations, versatile utility, and adventure-ready capability, the Subaru Outback is one of the most compelling options in its segment. And while Elgin shoppers have plenty of crossover SUV options, the Outback's excellent well-roundedness puts it in a league of its own. To show you what we mean, here's a quick look at how outshines three of its most prominent competitors, the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Mazda CX-5.

Subaru Outback vs. Toyota RAV4

  • Like all Subaru models, the Outback comes standard with Subaru's signature Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive system and X-MODE advanced traction management. The RAV4 offers all-wheel-drive, but it's only standard on two of the top trim levels.

  • Outback's second trim level, Premium, includes the winter-friendly All-Weather package with heated front seats, heated power-folding mirrors, and a windshield wiper de-icer. These are only available on the RAV's top tiers.

  • The Outback and RAV4 both offer a full suite of advanced driver aids as standard equipment, but the Outback also comes with standard LED steering-adaptive headlights. The RAV4 only offers adaptive headlights as an option on the top tiers of its hybrid variant.

  • And while both Outback and RAV4 come standard with a 7-inch touchscreen and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, by stepping up just one level from the Outback's base trim, Elgin drivers can enjoy more screen real estate courtesy of an 11.6-inch display. RAV4 only offers an 8-inch upgrade, and you have to climb to the fourth-tier Adventure trim.

Subaru Outback vs. Mazda CX-5

  • With all seats in place, the Subaru Outback retains 32.5 cubic feet for your luggage, groceries, or other gear. And with the second-row folded, capacity grows to a cavernous 75.7 cubic feet. The Mazda CX-5 comes with 30.9 cubic feet for cargo, and tops out at just 59.6 cubes with the rear seats folded.

  • The Outback (182 hp) and CX-5 (187 hp) have similar power standard power numbers. However, the Outback also equips a more powerful turbocharged 2.4-liter engine on XT trim levels that produces 260 horsepower. The CX-5 also overs a turbocharged engine option, but it makes 227 horsepower on regular gas. You need 93 octane to get the full 250 hp.

  • In terms of all-wheel-drive, the story is similar to other Outback matchups. The Outback comes standard with Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive and X-MODE, while the CX-5 only offers its on-road-focused AWD system as an option.

  • The Subaru Outback offers integrated STARLINK® navigation as an option for Premium and Limited models and standard for Touring, Onyx Edition XT, and Wilderness™. The CX-5 reserves the Mazda Navigation System for the very top Signature trim level.
