The new Subaru Impreza Sport Hybrid borrows the hybrid powertrain from the closely related Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid to enhance the model's performance and efficiency credentials. The XV Crosstrek, which is effectively the Impreza hatchback with more ground clearance, added body work, different wheels, and the same symmetrical all-wheel drive, has been a favorite here in the Chicagoland area. The new Impreza Sport Hybrid would add some body work to make it look a little bit more aggressive, while keeping most of the same equipment as the standard Impreza.
For reference, the current Impreza gets a 2.0L Boxer four-cylinder engine to produce 148 hp and 145 lb-ft of torque. It's paired with a continuously variable transmission or a manual transmission for an impressive EPA rating of up to 28 mpg city/37 mpg highway.
The XV Crosstrek Hybrid, which takes the same engine and adds a battery pack and an electric motor, makes 160 hp and 163 lb-ft of torque and is rated by the EPA at 30 mpg city/34 mpg highway. The lighter Impreza hatchback would likely boast better fuel economy numbers than the Crosstrek, and the Hybrid model would be expected to best the base Impreza according to EPA estimates, as well.
One interesting feature that the new Impreza Sport Hybrid will offer will be a special edition of the Subaru EyeSight preventative safety system that would potentially help boost fuel economy even further. It would use the windshield-mounted camera and adaptive cruise control to help employ both regenerative braking and electric power, in order to maximize the vehicle's efficiency depending on traffic and terrain.
