Lower Control Arm Replacement

Subaru Lower Control Arm Service

When it comes to your Subaru suspension system, a primary concern for many owners is the overall quality of the riding experience. A critical part of the suspension system is the lower control arms. These arms are responsible for connecting the body or frame that holds the front wheel in place to the assembly, or steering knuckle. Equipped with ball joints and bushings, the lower control arms are allowed to move and have the flexibility to adapt to various road conditions, creating greater steering control. Most importantly, these arms are responsible for holding each of the front wheels on the road, contributing to a smoother and more stable ride.

Repairing or Replacing Your Lower Control Arm

Over time, the lower control arms may begin to show tell-tale signs indicating its time for service. Here are a few common signs that may be noticed:

  • Steering pull - when bushings or ball joints become worn down, the steering alignment of the vehicle will begin to noticeably shift, causing the steering to pull to the right or the left while driving. The driver is then forced to make constant corrections in steering while driving to force the vehicle to drive straight.
  • Odd clunking noises - overtime, the ball joints or bushings may begin to loosen and can begin to knock while the car is in operation, particularly over uneven terrain. The sound of clunking may become noticeably louder the longer the car is driven.
  • Vibrating steering wheel - one of the most common symptoms of worn control arms is a vibrating steering wheel. Excessively worn ball joints or bushings will typically increase during acceleration of the vehicle. When this is noticed, it is imperative to have your vehicle serviced.

Ignoring any of these signs and not seeking service can lead to control arm breakage or failure while driving posing a dangerous threat to driver safety. The front wheel of the vehicle can separate from the lower half of the suspension system potentially causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
