There was a time back in the mid-1990s when the Subaru Outback was just an optional variant of the Legacy wagon, fitted with a little protective body cladding and a slightly raised ride height. However, these additions, which gave the Legacy Outback more versatility and improved off-road manners, proved to be quite popular among the more outdoorsy types. So, Subaru decided to emphasize these attributes and spin-off the Outback into its own nameplate, and the World's First Sport Utility Wagon would go on to become a key part of the automaker's transition in the adventure-focused brand we know today.

Now, Subaru is taking things to the next level once again, introducing the all-new 2022 Outback Wilderness™. Here's a quick look at what makes the Wilderness™ the most rugged and capable Outback ever.

  • More Clearance: Already one of the most capable models in its segment, the Subaru Outback comes standard with 8.7-inches of ground clearance, Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive, and X-MODE advanced traction management. The Outback Wilderness™ expands on these attributes, elevating clearance to 9.5 inches with specially tuned suspension to improve all-terrain stability while maintaining Outback's signature on-road comfort and composure. Additionally, redesigned bumpers significantly increase the Outback's approach, departure, and ramp breakover angles.

  • Enhanced Traction: The Outback Wilderness™ features a special dual-function X-MODE system with extra settings for Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud, plus a revised final drive ratio (4.44:1) for more available low-end torque. Additionally, the Outback Wilderness™ equips exclusive matte-black 17-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Yokohama GEOLANDAR® all-terrain tires, plus a standard full-size spare stored under the cargo area.

  • More Power: The Outback Wilderness™ is powered by the XT-variants' 2.4-liter turbocharged BOXER engine. The powerplant produces a potent 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque and gives the Outback a max towing capacity of 3,500 pounds.

  • Ready for the Outdoors: Subaru imagined owners using a rooftop tent while exploring beyond the asphalt, so it gave the Outback Wilderness™ a fixed ladder-type roof rack system with a static load limit of 700 pounds. Additionally, you won't have to worry about getting a little dirty, thanks to water-repellant StarTex upholstery and standard all-weather floor mats.
